Much to the cats‘ chagrin, we have a gecko who comes to dare them every evening on the living room window. As regular as a clock, Billy or Joe turns up every evening once the light is on and stays on the other side of the window.
Any one of the three cats can sit patiently for hours watching them, trying to catch the geckos unawares by jumping up on them.
The geckos are safe. Occasionally, they will scurry up or sideways as if to taunt the cats on the other side of the window.
On the living room side of the window, nothing is safe. Wherever the cat lands with a thump after their jump, objects are knocked over or destroyed on the way. As far as the cats are concerned, this is the small price of ridding the window of unwanted geckos.
I admire their perseverance and focus. Nothing distracts them from this task except when I turn off the lights and go to bed. Then, the bedroom and my bed become the new centre of focus.
I suspect that the geckos follow suit - the show is over until the next evening…
And I am left wondering whether I am as focused and perseverant as my cats.
